Earth Overshoot Day
Earth Overshoot Day (EOD) marks the date when humanity's demand for ecological resources and services in a given year exceeds what the earth can regenerate in that year.
The EOD is calculated by dividing the world's biocapacity (the amount of natural resources generated by the earth that year), by the world's ecological footprint (humanity's consumption of the earth's natural resources for that year) and multiplying by 365, the number of days in a year.
We simply use too many resources. Disposable items, clothing, furniture, devices, etc.
Did you know that around one trillion single-use plastic bags are used annually across the globe? That's almost 2 million every minute. And the world uses 500 billion plastic cups every year. And around the world, people put away more than 4.5 trillion cigarette butts each year. And and and.
We are generations of overconsumption. We buy and throw away.
